Five Energy Sources
1. Solar PowerSolar power is created by converting sunlight into electricity. The conversion can be made in two different ways.
One way is to use photovoltaic methods with solar panels. A second method is to use mirrors or lenses to focus sunlight into a narrow beam. Want to learn more? Watch this video. Check out this graphic for more information on how solar panels work. |
2. Wind PowerWind power is created by converting the energy of the wind into some kind of useful energy.
The conversion can be made in several ways such as using giant wind turbines to make electricity or using windmills for mechanical energy. To learn more about wind turbines and how they work, check out this animated info-graphic. |
3. Hydro PowerHydro power is the use of moving or falling water to produce electricity or to operate mechanical devices.
To see how a hydroelectric power plant works, check out this video. |
4. Nuclear PowerA nuclear power plant creates electricity through the nuclear fission of uranium.
The heat given off by the fission process heats water and produces steam. The steam turns a turbine that is connected to a generator which produces electricity. Watch this video to learn more. |
5. Plant PowerPlant material, or biomass, can be processed to produce fuels like ethanol and biodiesel.
Microorganisms can be used to break down plant material, such as corn and sugar cane. |
