Five Geometry Terms
Geometry is a kind of mathematics that deals with shapes. Euclid, Archimedes,
and Descartes are famous mathematicians that studied geometry.

1. Angles
An angle is the measurement (in degrees) of the space between two lines
that are joined at a single point. Different angles are given different names
based on their size. To learn more, click here.

2. Triangles
Did you know that triangles are given different names depending on how many of
their sides are equal in length or the size of their angles? To learn more, click here.
3. Lines
Lines can be parallel (they are side by side, but never meet), intersecting (crossing),
or perpendicular (cross making a 90 degree angle).
4. Hypotenuse
Hypotenuse is just a fancy term for the side of a right triangle that is opposite the
90 degree angle (the longest side).

5. Pythagorean Theorem
Right triangles are really cool and here is one reason why. First label the sides of
your right triangle a, b, and c, like in the picture below so that side c is the hypotenuse.
Then, if you square the length of side a and square the length of side b, and then add
them together, you will get the length of side c squared! To learn more, click here.
Let's try out the Pythagorean Theorem.
Let's suppose the length of side a = 3 and the length of side b = 4 So how do we find the length of side c? First we calculate a squared, which is 3 squared = 9 Then we calculate b squared, which is 4 squared = 16 So 9 + 16 = 25 The square root of 25 is 5. So side c (the hypotenuse) = 5! |
